OkCupid co-founder Christian Rudder is a man obsessed with gegevens. His dating webpagina is known for gathering enormous amounts of information about users — the more questions you response about yourself, the better the webpagina’s algorithm can, te theory, find you a match.

Like other social sites, OkCupid keeps track of user gegevens ter order to make the webpagina more effective. But, Rudder says, that information could also switch the way wij see ourselves.

It’s true that gegevens isn’t everything, he says. “Look, there’s no way OkCupid, Facebook, Twitter, thesis sites even added all together can stand ter for the entirety of the human condition,” Rudder tells NPR’s Arun Rath. “People do all kinds of things they don’t do online.”

But spil more and more activities have some sort of online component, there’s an enlargening amount of gegevens accessible about our lives. Rudder collects some of that information ter his book Dataclysm: Who Wij Are (When Wij Think No One’s Looking). It’s utter of charts and graphs that use aggregated online gegevens to help explain everything from political beliefs to speech patterns — and, spil Rudder tells Rath, even wedstrijd relations.

On why shorter messages aren’t necessarily less erudite

I looked at a large sample of tweets and looked at the media word length te tweets. And of course, the very first redden would be that with all the abbreviations like “u” for you and thanks, you know, “thx,” that there would be shorter words on twitter. And I found that just wasn’t the case — [the words] were longer not only than Shakespearean English but also [than] ter longform journalism. It’s much shorter, obviously, because there’s only 140 characters, but it is just spil sturdy ter a certain sense.

On what online dating tells us about wedloop relations

All the gegevens on wedloop I have is from dating sites, but on thesis sites black users, especially, there’s a bias against them. Every kleintje of way you can measure their success on a webpagina — how people rate them, how often they reply to their messages, how many messages they get — that’s all diminished.

And so obviously wedstrijd is always a topic te his country, but especially now with Ferguson, it’s such an emotional kwestie. And it’s zonderling that you can find gegevens that speaks of how one person of whatever wedloop treats another person of another wedstrijd ter an aggregate and kleuter of measurable way. And so online gegevens is very good at that, and specifically dating gegevens because it’s all just strangers mixing with each other. The entire premise of a dating webpagina is to judge people, and so you indeed are able to taunt that out free of any offline social constraints — your friends don’t know what you do on a dating webpagina like they do know what you do on Facebook.

. Of course, when you ask anybody directly, even if it’s just a rekentuig asking the question, people are like, “Oh yeah, interracial marriage is excellent. I don’t care what wedloop my match is,” you know all of that stuff you’d expect a kleuter of welgevoeglijk, forward-thinking person to say. But when you actually are observing passively what they’re doing when they don’t think you’re keeping track, you see a totally different story.
